Kitchen and joinery terms: Australia, US and UK
Reviewed by Bo, Project Manager at NOVARTE · Updated
Benchtop or countertop? Splashback or backsplash? A glossary of kitchen and joinery terms used in Australia, the US and the UK.
The practical answer
Australians commonly say benchtop, splashback and kickboard; Americans say countertop, backsplash and toe kick; in the UK, worktop, splashback and plinth are common. An upstand is a lower wall-protection strip, not always a full splashback. Use the table with dimensions and photos so your drawings and quotation describe the same thing.
The same room, different words

These are common usages, not exclusive national rules or automatic technical equivalents. Confirm the component, material and dimensions; a regional name alone is not a specification.
| Australia | United States | United Kingdom | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| benchtop | countertop | worktop | The work surface on top of base cabinets. |
| splashback | backsplash | splashback or upstand | Wall protection behind the work surface; an upstand is a lower strip, not necessarily a full splashback. |
| kickboard | toe kick | plinth | The recessed base area and its cover panel; confirm whether the drawing means the panel or the clear space. |
| overhead cupboards | wall cabinets | wall units | Cabinets mounted on the wall. |
| pantry | pantry | larder | Food storage, often a tall cabinet; it can also mean a separate room. |
| cooktop | cooktop or stovetop | hob | The cooking surface. |
| rangehood | range hood | cooker hood | Extraction above the cooking surface. |
| tap | faucet | tap | The water outlet. |
| carcass | cabinet box | carcass | The cabinet body behind the doors. |
| 2-pac | painted or lacquered | painted or lacquered | A two-component sprayed coating; specify the coating system, since a painted finish is not automatically 2-pac. |
| joinery | millwork | joinery | Custom-built cabinetry and woodwork; confirm the actual items included. |
| wardrobe | closet | wardrobe | Clothes storage; confirm whether built-in cabinetry or a separate space is intended. |
| vanity | vanity | vanity unit | Bathroom cabinetry associated with a basin. |
| handleless | handleless | handleless | A door or drawer without a projecting pull. Confirm whether the grip is routed into its edge, uses a recessed rail, or relies on opening hardware. |
| J-pull | J-pull | J-pull | A J-shaped grip profile at a front edge. Specify the section drawing; the name alone does not define dimensions. |
| finger-pull | finger pull | finger pull | A recessed place to grip a front. The detail can be part of the front or a separate channel. |
| shadowline | — | — | A deliberate recessed gap or line. In a kitchen it may describe a channel detail; it is not by itself a hardware or grip specification. |
| mitre joint | miter joint | mitre joint | An angled joint between parts; a right-angle corner commonly uses two 45-degree cuts. Specify fixing and exposed edges separately. |
| bevelled edge | beveled edge | bevelled edge | An angled edge cut. A small chamfer removes a sharp corner; specify its size and the surfaces it joins. |
| PET-faced board | PET-faced panel | PET-faced panel | A decorative PET film bonded to a board. PET identifies the surface film, not the board core or a guaranteed performance grade. |
| thermofoil | thermofoil | vinyl-wrapped door | A formed decorative film over a shaped board. Confirm the actual film material: thermofoil is not automatically PET. |
| particleboard | particleboard | chipboard | A pressed wood-particle core. The selected board grade, edge sealing and supplier report matter more than the generic name. |
| LSB / strand board | — | — | A supplier designation requiring clarification. Request the exact board construction and technical sheet; do not assume that LSB and OSB grades are interchangeable. |
How to brief a factory in China
Use dimensions, drawings and photos rather than a spoken label alone. Mark the item on a plan, state millimetres or inches explicitly, and identify the finish, hardware and installation responsibility.
For example: “Base cabinet run, 3,200 mm long; work surface 600 mm deep; 100 mm wall upstand.” Confirm appliance cut-outs and clearances from the actual product information.
Grips, surfaces and board cores
A regional word is a starting point. For a handleless kitchen, agree the grip section; for a door finish, name the film or coating and its substrate. The term PET is not a substitute for identifying a thermoformed film.

Regional usage was compared with manufacturer documentation on 28 October 2026. Terms overlap and manufacturers use variants; drawings and material specifications take precedence. Grip and material definitions added on 30 October 2026 from the NOVARTE workshop brief; unresolved regional equivalents are shown as a dash.
